How to make your own Onigiri Friend Plushie Demo!
Materials you will need:
- White fleece fabric (make sure it’s not semi-see-through. You could also use white felt if you wanted to.)
- A small bit of fabric for your umeboshi (most fabric stores have a strap bin where you can buy small leftover pieces of fabric for much cheaper prices.)
- Felt- black, blue and red (this depends on the colors you’ll need for its face and the Nori hat, so you can use different colors if you want.)
- White thread and other threads matching your felt/ umeboshi fabric choices
- Sewing scissors
- Stuffing
- Hot glue gun (you could also use fabric glue, but that sometimes shows through and discolors certain types of fabric and even felt occasionally)
- Strap of cardboard that’s clean (for the umeboshi cardboard support circle)
Here’s the pattern: Onigiri Friend Pattern (requires Adobe Acrobat)
Here’s the list for the order in which you'll be constructing the plushie:
- Cut out all the pieces following the pattern
- Glue on the Nori hat pieces to the front and back Onigiri fleece body pieces
- Cut out the pieces of felt face pieces and sew them on to front of the Onigiri face
- Construct the umeboshi
- Attach the umeboshi to the back of the Onigiri's body piece
- Sew together the gusset with the front (face) triangle body while aligning the Nori hat gusset piece (leaving an opening to stuff)
- Sew the other side of the gusset to the back triangle body piece in the same way as the previous time (leaving an opening to stuff).
- Turn the plushie inside-out.
- Stuff the plushie.
- Sew stuffing opening close.
- Hug!
